Description

If English is not your first language, an accredited Reading in ESOL certificate will support you to improve essential English skills for reading short, simple texts on everyday topics. This will improve your education and employment opportunities.

Growing your confidence with English will help to make life in the UK easier, get a job, communicate with doctors, neighbours, and public transport workers, help your children with homework and talk to their teachers, and progress onto achieving a higher level English qualification.

This course is delivered by Bedfordshire Employment & Skills Academy, part of Central Bedfordshire Council.

What does the qualification cover?
This course will help you to read and understand short, straightforward texts accurately and independently. You will cover reading a bus schedule to find out when the next bus will arrive, reading a map to navigate to a new place, reading a weather forecast, reading a news article, reading a job advertisement, reading a menu at a restaurant, reading a product label to understand its ingredients and usage instructions, and reading a recipe to learn how to cook a dish.

Who is it suitable for?
This award is suitable for learners who first language isn't English. You will complete an initial assessment to determine your level and be offered a place on the right level course for you.

How is it completed?
Complete this award by attending sessions at a local community venue. There is approximately 1-2 hours of homework expected per week.

How long does it take to complete the qualification?
Approximately 3 to 4 months.

What are the entry requirements?
You must be at least 19 years old living or working in Central Bedfordshire or Bedford Borough and have been a resident in the UK for 3 years.

At a local community venue (in Central Bedfordshire or Bedford Borough).

When can I start?
This course is delivered multiple times across the year. Before enrolling onto the course, you must attend an ESOL workshop to meet the tutor and complete an initial assessment to determine your proficiency level. What can I progress onto after completing?
You can progress onto higher level English courses and a Functional Skills English qualification.
