What does the qualification cover?
This qualification will give you the knowledge and skills you need to support children and young people effectively in a school environment. You’ll explore how children and young people develop, including the factors that can influence their growth, learning and wellbeing, while developing an understanding of diversity, inclusion and how to create an environment where every child feels valued and supported. You’ll also build your professional communication skills, learning how to communicate effectively with children, young people, colleagues, parents and carers. Safeguarding is a key part of the qualification, helping you understand your responsibilities, relevant policies and procedures, and how to support children’s welfare. You’ll also gain an insight into how schools operate, exploring their structure, ethos, legislation, and the different roles and responsibilities within the school environment.
Who is it suitable for?
This course is ideal for individuals who are interested in starting a career in education, particularly as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant in a school setting. It does not require previous experience working in schools.
How is it completed?
You'll attend 12, 3-hour sessions spread across 6 months, fully participate in all activities, and complete a voluntary placement at the school the course is running at, for a minimum of 3 hours per week. You'll also complete e-learning and written questions as homework.
How long does it take to complete the qualification?
Approximately 6 months.
What are the entry requirements?
You must be at least 19 years old, be able to attend all sessions and complete the voluntary placement.

What can I progress onto after completing?
You could progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, subject to being in the right job role.
