What does the qualification cover?
This qualification provides learners with the knowledge and skills they need to support children and young people in educational settings. It explores child and young person development and considers how development can influence learning, behaviour and wellbeing.

Learners will develop their understanding of safeguarding and how to promote the health, safety and welfare of children and young people. They will also explore ways to encourage positive behaviour and create inclusive environments that promote equality, diversity and participation.

The qualification also focuses on effective communication and building positive professional relationships, alongside developing practical skills to support teaching and learning. Learners will gain an understanding of the roles, responsibilities and professional standards expected when working with children and young people, helping them to feel confident and prepared for their role within an educational setting.

Who is it suitable for?
This qualification is suitable for anyone working or volunteering for a minimum of 7 hours per week. You must be fully involved with supporting children in their lessons, working under the direction of the class teacher.

How is it completed?
There are 10 mandatory units in this qualification covering a range of topics, all of which need to be completed and signed off by your assessor to confirm competency. These units are a combination of knowledge (where you write about the subject) and skills (where you are observed or discuss the subject).
Your assessor will visit you in your setting every 6-8 weeks. Prior to this meeting, you will have a detailed plan of what will be covered, and you will be expected to make suitable preparations. You should aim to allocate 4-5 hours per week to this qualification, in order to complete it within the given 10 months.

How long does it take to complete the qualification?
10 months.

What are the entry requirements?
You must be at least 19 years old and working or volunteering in key stage 1 or above, for a minimum of 7 hours per week.

Location
Independent learning with support from an assessor and observations at your workplace.

When can I start?
Anytime.

What can I progress onto after completing?
You could progress onto the NCFE Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Supporting Teaching and Learning (Diploma).
